Great photo SW! I've seen raccoon dogs at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo, but that is just about the only collection in North America that keeps the species.
Thanks. Raccoon dogs are pretty common in European, Russian and Chinese collections (zootierliste mentions over 60 institutions in Europe-and I'm pretty sure that's just the tip of the iceberg...), especially in smaller wildlife parks.
Additionally, they are quite abundant in the commercial fur trade, are now and then sold as pets and are an increasingly common neozoon species in Europe. As Pets
However, the ones at Vyškov and Bratislava have been the only ones so far willing to pose for a photo.
Wow, great shot. These animals are so beautiful, but I found it very difficult to see any in the UK, I asked here on zoochat and found one only 30 minutes drive from me, so I was lucky.
Do you know of a list of zoo's in Europe that keep them?
I will have to bite my lip about them being kept in Chinese zoo's knowing what they do with them in the fur trade.........
Maguari,
Thanks so much for that.So pleased I joined this site as I learn something all the time.
Seems like only the smaller zoo's in Europe keep them which is a shame because they could do with all the good publicity they can get.
