Hoopoe

Presumably Upupa epops saturata.
I have never seen this bird before, according to wikipedia it is rarely found in the UK. It was not at all shy and let me approach to within a couple of metres whilst it dug for insects next to the path. The black and white patterns on the tail and wings are quite extraordinary, as is the crest when erect.

very nice. I was so excited about seeing my first wild hoopoe (which was also in China, incidentally) and now I've seen them in a few countries. They are surprisingly small in real life, and also surprisingly bold. One of my favourite birds.

This was my first wild one:

I love the name as well - Upupa epops!

The only hoopoes I've ever seen are the two captive ones in Bird Paradise:p

They do occur in Japan, but they usually only come to the northern areas, where I rarely ever go. Hopefully, one day I will travel to China and see them!
