Chlidonias

red parrot cichlids

just a few of them....

Sept 2013
What are these fish? I know they are a hybrid, but are they self fertile and what is the parentage I have seen them locally to but often wondered where they came from.

nobody really knows the parent species for sure, but I think they first appeared in Taiwan. They usually aren't fertile as far as I'm aware.

They are unfortunate fish, with their deformed body shape. They can't eat properly because of the mouth shape, and I think they suffer various maladies from the abnormal body proportions.

EDIT: the Wikipedia page says that males are usually infertile and females fertile (so you can breed females with other cichlid species, but not with male red parrots). It also gives a definite statement on the two parent species, but I don't know that that has actually been confirmed (most of what I have heard in the past stresses the uncertainty).
