White rhinoceros

I hate to spoil things for all of you!

According to the international studbook rhino Mungo was transferred on 18/9/1999 to Jinan Safari Park. The studbook reports its death as 24/12/2001 ...

Supposedly, the current male rhino in Beijing Zoo was a male (named Kotarou and born in 1985 in Japan) that was captive-born in the Kyushu safari park in Japan and arrived in April 1997.

Perhaps, our esteemed local zoo afficionados can check whether the above is true or not …?

It's astonished! Someone had said that the male is not Mungo, but no more details, so I didn't pay much attention... Your above information is very likely to be sadly true... I will check. And did you find the information of Nykasi?

So between 1997 and 1999 there should be three white rhinos in Beijing Zoo, but why I didn't remember there used to be three......

Therefore their Baird's tapir and manatees were reciprocal gifts from Mexico city and i believe the national zoo in Washington DC presented a pair of musk oxen, but did Paris send anything to Beijing?

All I can say is she was captive-born at Blackpool in 29/6/1973 (shortly after import, so she was sired by a wild bull) and transferred to Beijing on 12/12/1974 (with Mungo) to Beijing. Her mother … incidentally never bred while in captivity.

She is currently listed as Lost to Transfer (since). This either suggests she died or was transferred to an unknown location at some point (the latter seems less likely so).

So sorry, my info is lousy from there on …!

France sent a pair of European brown bear to Beijing, and they bred well.

Sorry to digress this thread further but I thought Beijing Zoo got their Musk ox (Ovibos moschatus) from San Francisco Zoo

And sorry to digress this thread even further, but another interesting fact about caprids at Beijing Zoo is that Madrid Zoo gave them Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) in exchange for Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), and San Diego Zoo actually got their Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) from Beijing Zoo

1 other I interesting Caprinae species that Beijing had a while ago
was the Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) but i dont know where they came from, I also remember hearing that they also had Formosan serow (Capricornis swinhoei) that came from Taipei Zoo but I cannot confirm that, Zirandelighun or Baboon do you guys know anything about that ?

White Rhino breeding was a big deal in those days. Whipsnade was the first UK zoo to achieve it, which is not surprising given they imported that large herd.

But I wasn't aware that Blackpool had produced a calf from an already pregnant imported female also in 1973 when the early Whipsnade births were occurring (bar the one in 1971). I suspect the mother did not breed again due to a 'pair' situation at Blackpool Zoo.
