There are 8 or 9 Baird’s tapir at Beijing Zoo now, and they do breed recent years. However, they are all descendants of two tapirs from Mexico in 1976, so they have been inbreeding for long time, but they all seems to be healthy.
@vogelcommando Sad to hear about the problems with inbreeding. I doubt very much that most Mexican zoos would consider sending any individuals of this species to Beijing zoo.
Every individual kept in captivity within the country is important for ex-situ conservation and there would be some very understandable concerns regarding their welfare in China.
However, if the prospect of an exchange for giant pandas was brought up though I'm sure some of these institutions would be persuaded in no time...
