Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Centre - I haven't been personally but from what I've seen they have excellent conservation and education programmes as well as nice enclosures. By the way, I suggest you don't watch avatar, or you will never wish to see another film

c'mon you guys (Animal and redpanda), I think its been well-established that you can judge a country - indeed, an entire culture - based on photos from a few zoos
I don´t mind admitting that I very much judge human cultures by the way animals are treated. However, if there actually are a few good zoos in China, then I am glad indeed.
The Chengdu Panda Breeding centre was indeed pretty neat. I have never seen so many Giant and Styan's Red Pandas together in one place (about 50 of each), and I'm pretty sure it'll take a while for me to see so many again.
The zoo, however, was another matter...
To be honest such a scene was commonplace in pet shops throughout the UK until fairly recently. I remember seeing tanks full of hundreds of baby terrapins at 50p each.
