golden snub-nosed monkey cage

this was part of the series of nasty mandrill cages. Concrete walls painted with jungle scenes, a bit of play equipment, viewed through windows at two levels (ground level and from the raised walk). This was larger than most of the mandrill cages.

There were three golden monkey cages at the zoo. One was really good, one was poor, and then there was this one which was larger than the poor one but really just did not seem suitable to be housing them in. One of the monkeys in here in particular seemed a bit deranged and was continually biting itself on the arm.

I suppose for them,Golden Monkeys are nothing special so don't warrant special housing. Its strange to see them in mediocre housing like this.

Do they breed well in Chinese Zoos?

they seem to breed perfectly well -- in fact they don't appear to be any more difficult to keep than any other monkey really. Most that I saw at various zoos had babies or animals of different ages in there.

Golden monkeys are sort of a number one special animal in China, but they are usually kept in pretty bog-standard cages at the zoos. Much like the pandas actually.

Hopefully, one day, some can be seen agian in the Western world esp. if they are "so easy to keep and to breed" !

Last thing I heard re golden snub nosed monkeys was that due to mediocre breeding performance no snubs were allowed to go overseas. I highly regard Chlidonias' assessment and it would appear that the studbook keeper has somehow overcome some of the poor breeding of late … Well, if they then upgrade their primate exhibits in the average Chinese zoo … that would be something too …

Good primate zoos are Nanning and Wuxi …, if I am not mistaken. Probably, baboon will vouch for what is currently going.
