How did the elephant exhibit compare to elephant exhibits in western zoos? Based on the photos here it looks like comparable to one that could be found in a European or American zoo before the current modernization boom.
Thanks very much - I`m having great fun posting my Shanghai Zoo pics so it`s my pleasure .
I enjoyed my visit to Shanghai Zoo - even though I had to fit it into a punishing work schedule and the day I visited was VERY hot and humid .
I have posted a review on here ( which was done while still under the influence of jet lag ) but having re-read it I think it`ll do ok ...
Just put Shanghai Zoo into the advanced search box over on the right and it should pop up . Have wondered if I should ask for it to be moved into the Shanghai Zoo forum - which has no postings as far as I can tell - but not sure of the ettiquette involved !!?
The Elephant house did indeed remind me of many western one`s of yesteryear ... I`ve been visiting Zoos for about 44 years now so do remember many that were probably a great deal worse than this ...
The Shanghai House was certainly big - it housed 4 Elephants if memory serves me correctly - but they were all penned separately . My main concern was the outdoor enclosure which was difficult to work out .
It appeared to be a fortified paddock set within a much larger and overgrown area behind a moat ... seemed to me at first as if it was an old unused enclosure . The available area was pretty good - but a great deal of it was unused ( as far as I could tell ) and judging by the vegetation it was out of bounds to the animals ... why they were all shut indoors on such a hot day I also couldn`t work out as the house itself was in no way a cool area !!
I have to say that the animals appeared fit and well but also have to say that I didn`t linger in the house as it was ( along with some of the carnivore enclosures and the housing for macaques ) probably one of the least good parts of the zoo .
I expect others on this site might have been more critical than I appear to have been but I have no idea of the circumstances surrounding these animals and their enclosure - maybe the whole outside area behind the moat had been utilised at one point and then reduced/fortified due to an accident or some other event ??
Am still in the process of uploading my photos - there are plenty more to come - if you would like to see some of the Elephants in their pens then let me know . Those pics are not brilliant which is why I posted the overall shots of the house instead ...
