lion enclosure

a very large dry-moated enclosure. This photo only shows part of the front area, and the enclosure also extends back well beyond the trees (it may be possible to see part of the fence-line if you enlarge the photo).

The lions were signposted as Asiatic lions but they may be hybrids.

For everything else at the zoo, see my review here: http://www.zoochat.com/254/visit-assam-state-zoo-guwahati-10-a-358287/
I think in retrospect the Lions were probably in this enclosure when I went too(it was a number of years ago now!). They were labelled 'Asian' but I don't know about the purity, there was an edict at the time that all Indian Zoos should exhibit this species.

Much of the zoo I don't remember even with your photos to jog memory, but the wider shots giving the general location certainly look familiar- and the Hoolock Gibbon island I certainly remember- see my comment on that.

in Asian zoos -- and especially in Indian zoos it would seem -- it is very difficult to tell whether an enclosure is new or old. I would have thought the gibbon island, for example, was more recent than your visit. This lion enclosure looks like it would have been there when you visited ... but hard to know!
