I assume the breeding stock of Indian rhinos has gone off show to the conservation breeding range. In effect, the recent birth is probably down to the fact they finally built them purposeful exhibits and not grassed open plain ranges …
I would expect the status / numbers may be expected to start increasing further in the 2014-2015 year (as I understand it they now mean business and ASZ is the coordinating zoo with Kanpur, Delhi and Patna participating partners.
As to the rescuee from Kaziranga: probably named after the site she was first found at Rani (Chapori) sandbar. She had an estimated age at capture of around 30 and due to her injuries it was deemed ASZ was the best site to have her receive treatment. I think she is still at ASZ now and might actually remain as part of the breeding herd. I cannot give you anything what her previous breeding stature was … (at Kaziranga).
@Pertinax, yes … in the late nineties the number hovered around 9 for quite some time. The highest number was in 1995/96 with 8.4 in the zoo (it was at a time when the ASZ was very much the first port of call for rescued rhinos from Kaziranga floods and other incidents).
