New Guinea harpy eagle (Harpyopsis novaeguineae)

best shot I got because it didn't move from the awkward position it was in (photography-wise). I believe this is the only individual of its species in captivity in the world.

This may well be the only individual of its species in captivity in the world, but I made a similar statement about the lone maleo at Ragunan and the single Javan hawk-eagles at Ragunan and Bali Bird Park and I had to eat my words :D

There used to be a New Guinea harpy eagle at Antwerp Zoo; I saw it several times during the 1980s. (Somewhere I have some slides I took of this specimen; I must scan some of my old slides onto my computer and load then into the gallery.)

The male bird left Edinburgh for Antwerp 08/02/78

Thank you for this prompt reply.

This bird was always one of my favourites at Antwerp; somehow I doubt we’ll ever see another individual of this species in Europe.
