Chlidonias

maleo (Macrocephalon maleo)

I believe this is the only maleo in captivity. It was very difficult to get a photo of this bird as it was so used to being fed by the visitors that it would continually come right up to the wire and I couldn't focus on it!

review of my visit here: http://www.zoochat.com/238/ragunan-zoo-visit-27-september-2009-a-107542/
There is a breeding group in New York (2,5,1 according to ISIS). I don't remember seeing any in Weltvogelpark Walsrode (new name of the park 2010) last year, but they had a pair on display for several years. The park is not in the ISIS. The birds at Walsrode didn't have the clear pink color like this one.

Oh thanks. I had heard this was the only captive one (obviously wrong!)

There is a number of Meloeo in Indonesian rescue stations and (obscure) zoos. I suspect a total number might be close to 40 individuals and they still show up on Bird Market in Jakarta. Good enough to fund a breeding programme.

Currently Weltvogelpark Walsrode has one male Australian Brush-turkey (Alectura lathami lathami) and few birds of Wattled Brush-turkey (Aepypodius arfakianus) from two subspecies: arfakianus (one female) and misoliensis (pair).

Just as an update the Bronx Zoo currently has 12 Maleos, including three chicks born last year.

I believe the zoo works with a center in Sulawesi which houses them captively as well.
