Leopard in a Rodent Wheel

Found in an Animal Magazine from the 60ties. this picture was taken in a japanese Zoo. To give the leopards more room for movement in their small cage,, they tried out the Rodent wheel, normally used for pet hamsters....

Could be also a good option for elephants in too small enclosures, often found in Japan nowadays.

What subspecies of leopard is this? I assume that this is an Amur leopard, since they are the most commonly kept, but it seems awfully overweight.
