I didn't realise just how tiny the fairy penguin was until it walked near a Humboldt penguin - this is the best shot I could get.

I had the opposite reaction the first time I saw penguin that wasn't a little penguin. They all look huge to me because I've grown up with the smallest species.

is this at the Tokyo Sea Life Park? They should have a group of them there it seems, so unlucky you only saw one (or, conversely, lucky you did see this one).

I had a google and couldn't find when they arrived in Japan but I did find an old IZN article about penguins in Japan which said there were 24 little blues in Japan in 1995, in two aquariums (one being the Tokyo Sea Life Park and the other presumably being the Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium which is the other place they are kept today).

Yep, it's in Tokyo Sea Life Park. I had been expecting a small group, but I'm not sure how many they still hold. It's interesting that they held so many in 1995 - so have there been new imports or have they been breeding?

they were certainly breeding at that time - the article (pdf) is here http://www.izn.org.uk/Archive/276/276.pdf

I also discovered while googling about them that there are "penguin bars" in Japan. Weird.

Thanks for the link.

There are penguin bars, monkey restaurants, and cafes with owls, cats and snakes. :)

I actually had expected to visit the penguin bar in Ikebukuro during my trip - I thought it would be a fairly easy place to go with my friend. We didn't make it in the end, but I visited several more aquaria than I expected, so I didn't mind much. :D
