Also interesting - from a European perspective I've generally seen 'Gopher Tortoise' refer to the genus Gopherus as a whole, and then the species themselves to have additional modifiers.
I would probably use Common Gopher Tortoise (though Zootierliste uses Florida Gopher Tortoise - and in truth it doesn't really come up much, as Gopherus are pretty rare over here).
