Thanks for the compliment Carlos! The jackal was in perfect position for the photo, standing upright, but just when I switched my camera on he decided to rest, grrr.

Plzen Zoo has Southern black-backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas mesomelas), not Golden Jackal (Canis aureus).

It was labeled as C. aureus... and the jackal itself fits much better with this species

That still does not make it a golden jackal, it's fur and head much better fit to a black-backed jackal, a species they do keep...

Black-backed have a black stripe in the flanks that separates clearly the greyish back from the tanny belly. While golden jackal don't have that stripe... and mine don't have.

Maybe you can write to the zoo and ask what jackal species they had when the photo was taken.

Plzen zoo, at least until 2012, had only one species of Jackal: Black-backed Jackal. This results from the Annual Reports.

OK OK! I will change for Black-backed. But I don't understand why they don't have the coat of a black-backed...

Black backed do not always have that stripe....
