I believe that the situation is different for the African forest elephant subspecies. These are kept in some zoos across western Africa (I've seen them in Nigeria and Gabon), though no breeding groups. Mostly just individuals or no more than 2-3 animals.

We talked about it a little here on the third page. There are at least four African Forest Elephants outside of Africa in zoos and three of them are in Japan. By the way, the African Forest Elephant is no longer considered a subspecies, it has been upgraded to full species status. The North African Elephant is considered a different species by some but we'll never know since it's Extinct. There's a small chance that one or two Forest Elephants and/or Forest-Bush Elephant hybrids exist in U.S. zoos from when they were imported all as African Elephants but that mystery will, too, probably go unsolved.
