Bornean sumatran rhinoceros

Taken at lok Kawi wildlife park, 2008
I don't know, I believe a rescue. There was no information about how it got into the collection on the signs.

This must be the female Gelugob. She was rescued and kept with a male at a wildlife sanctuary. She had eye problems (they are still bad) and could therefore not be put back in the wild. They attempted to mate quite a few times but she never got pregnant. They did however created the husbandry guidelines when to put the male and female together, from which Cincinatti ultimately profited :)

Her mate died in a freak accident a few years ago (during a storm, a branch broke of a tree and fell on the male rhino, killing it). She was then moved from the wildlife sanctuary to a zoo to spend the rest of her days. She is now considered too old to breed. Amazing pictures Jo, thnx :)

She has since been moved to the Borneo Rhino Alliance breeding facility in a desperate attempt to breed her with a male named Tam Tam. She is too old but still lives out her final days there. She is now blind in both eyes. They are now attempting to breed Tam Tam with a female caught on Chrimas eve of last year named Puntung. Puntung lost her foot in a poacher's snare. This has caused her not to want to be breed because she can't support Tam Tam's weight. They are working on a prostetic leg for her.

Borneo Rhino Alliance ? BORA is an NGO which is dedicated to uniting partners in a concerted campaign to save Borneo's Sumatran Rhino from extinction.

Puntung still doesn't seem to have a prosthetic foot. In a recent RRC publication I found photos from BORA(same link as above?) of an attempted mating for her- she does have irregular oestrus cycles but because they are irregular the Leipzig(?) specialist team can't plan when to be on hand to assist. Anyhow, they get her to go in a sort of metal cage/crush, the idea being the male's weight is carried by that, not her, so that she doesn't collapse under him. Perhaps not surprisingly he was put off by it and wouldn't mount but being excited/frustrated started butting her from behind and they had to let her out again. This was late last year(2013). Possibly it will succeed with time though.

I've heard nothing more about the new female they caught recently, apart from her breeding prognosis being poor.
