was this labelled as R. sinensis? I can't remember if the tank had a scientific name attached or not when I was there (2011), but I've got them down as R. sumatrensis.
after I'd posted I was thinking some more and remembered that indeed the tank was labelled sumatrensis (I remembered because I recalled writing it down in my notebook as sumatranus by mistake).
This is a way better photo than I got; my camera batteries were almost drained and it was struggling to cope with just two more shots!
No it was definately sumatrensis. Ive probably got a photo of the sign somewhere. Was looking up wikipedia to make sure I had the spelling right and must have copied sinensis instead of sumatrensis.
i assume when you went they were still in the large glass aquarium near the entrance. the glass was pretty dirty and i tried multiple times through the day to try to get it so the light relfection was so bad.
their tank was just by the entrance to the "mini-safari" in the centre of the zoo (I'm not sure if that was there in 2009 or not), and I only found it accidentally near the end of the day. Unbelievably the batteries on both my cameras -- and both sets of spare batteries!! -- were drained for some inexplicable reason, so I was turning the camera off then when I turned it on I'd get about one second to take a photo before it turned off again. I managed to get a few completely unusable photos and just two vaguely acceptable ones which are in this gallery.
They must have moved. They were immediately after you paid to get in. I've got one other photo that I'll post. I was having so many camera problems on that trip because I fell over in Singapore with the camera and then the auto focus was pretty dodgy with it from then on.
