Photography isn't as easy as you might expect, especially as the glass is quite dirty. But judging by your description, this is probably a whole lot easier than Jerez. (I'm hoping to find out for myself this weekend ). The cat was also quite skittish and wouldn't approach or stay still for very long. There were still ample photo opportunities though.
The zoo and night safari are the same place. A few animals are rotated, but ultimately the zoo is open and lit up at night. I didn't see any flat-headed cats during the day, and it was only on my third and fourth night visits to the enclosure that I saw it. Lucky, as staff were telling me it might have died.
Might be cheaper for you to fly to KL and then get a bus to Taiping, but for that much effort it might be more reliable for you to travel to Bangkok and then another zoo, like Khao Kheow or Songkhla, which displays more than one.
When you go to Jerez, my experience is afternoon is better for lynxes than the morning. Of course if you plan to be there all day no problem, but if you want to budget half a day, the second half of the day is a better bet.
