I have to admit that I didn't know much about the tamarau either, except that it is very rare and not in any zoo today. After a little research, I found that only two individuals - a male and a female - remain in human care today at a governmental facility in the Phillipines.
The male is the first and only captive born tamarau, but overall the breeding project was a failure. 20 animals were originally caught for the project. The population in the wild is spread over three reserves on Mindoro and only about 300 individuals remain, making the tamarau one of the most endangered species on the planet.

Wonderful animal to see. Thanks for posting!
