Though traditionally regarded as a subspecies of the Short-tailed Mongoose (H. brachyurus), it seems the Palawan Mongoose actually belongs with the Collared Mongoose (H. semitorquatus).
This is the conclusion of a paper published in Dec. 2014: "Systematics of
the Southeast Asian mongooses (Herpestidae, Carnivora) - Solving the Mystery of the elusive collared mongoose and Palawan mongoose" in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.
Genetically, the Palawan Mongoose did not cluster with other populations of the Short-tailed Mongoose, but was closer to the Collared Mongoose.
