Jurong 2012

Ara militaris (Military Macaw). Fortunately JBP is reducing the number of clipped birds displayed at the "Macaw Island"; hopefully this means there are plans to get rid of it... Military and red Fronted were removed, only Blue and Gold, Green Wing and Scarlet remain... (hopefully not for long, these birds should be flying in one of Jurongs large aviaries, not cliped and forced to sit on a perch all day)

Very unlikely that Jurong will do away with Macaw Island - it is something the average visitor finds appealing. The two species you mentioned were removed for breeding as Jurong has much smaller numbers of these species (as compared to tens of dozens of Scarlet, Green-winged and Blue/Gold). Previously Hyacinths were also displayed on the island but ultimately moved to the macaw aviary at Parrot Paradise to encourage breeding.

I understand that people like to see the parrots with no visible bars or mesh, but I think the modern zoological institutions are moving away from this and Jurong should too... hopefully they will realize that. Still my favourite zoo in the world :D....

I'd like to see a macaw walk-thru at Jurong, but it would definitely need to have constant staff supervision.
