this tank isn't very inspiring. The other parts of Yangtze all look great but the salamander tank seems a little underwhelming.

haha thanks. I looked at that photo too but never saw the salamander exhibit at the end.

BTW thanks for posting the first photos Zooish. Singapore's tourism board has a lot to thank you for too. I should start saving for a trip back there :)

Has anybody ever devised a giant salamander exhibit that is substantially different than these tanks? The other ones that I've seen at the LA Zoo LAIR and the California Academy of Sciences look pretty similar. LA's tanks are perhaps a bit deeper and wider (but hard to judge from the photo). It seems like a fairly difficult species to display because they seem to like to hide under or behind rocks.

@Zooish: what do you think of River Safari so far? The panda habitats look pretty nice from the photo. Is it too early to have an accurate impression of the place since only a small part of it is open?

@PAT: I really should get paid by the tourism board and Wildlife Reserves Singapore for the free publicity :) The park is expected to open fully in February next year.

@DAVID: The River Safari is pretty much an extension of Singapore Zoo, so if you appreciate the look and feel of the Zoo, River Safari should rate well.

In fact I think giant salamanders are more situated for Night Safari, since they only come out under darkness.

Prague Zoo is building a stand-alone facility for giant salamanders that will feature multiple pools linked by cascades, replicating the fast-moving streams that are the preferred natural locations for these mini-monsters. The animals will be allowed/encouraged to move from basin to basin via the "rapids" as they do in nature.
