I need to try higher ISO settings next time (whenever that will be) I'm at the SNS, or as much as my Canon Powershot (i.e. not EOS) allows. However, I don't recall those lights over the exhibit. They certainly help in the darkness. Are they new or is it just that I don't recall them?
But I see (from the gallery) that there are other duirnal species kept here such as elephants who I would think sleep for up to a few hours and it doesnt seem they can do so here.

Elephants, giraffes, zebras and most ungulates are not strictly nocturnal nor diurnal. Like what Arizona Docent mentioned, these animals sleep for short durations throughout the entire day.
In any case, the Night Safari has one of the shortest operating hours of any zoo in the world - 5 hours every day (7pm till midnight, after which the lights are turned off). For the rest of the 19 hours, the animals are free from visitors staring at them and can rest as they wish.
