Adelaide Zoo 2008 - Former Gorilla exhibit

Former Gorilla exhibit.
These primate exhibits were bulldozed and the Westpac Envirodome was built there, which opened in 2009, forgot which month.

This was a great move by Adelaide Zoo, as I remember being shocked at just how poor the ape enclosures were on my visit in 2007. I believe that there were only 2-3 chimpanzees at the zoo then (awaiting the development of a new chimp habitat at Monarto) and perhaps no gorillas...but the demolishing of the exhibits in favour of a new, $3 million educational Envirodome is one of the best things that the zoo could have done. Toss in the new multi-million dollar entrance and two giant panda enclosures and this little zoo is probably much improved now.

Definitely improved, I was there last week. Couldn't find the old ape enclosures no matter how I tried, but there did seem o be this new building I didn't remember.

I don't know how practical the staff find the new entrance complex, but it certainly looks good.

Has the original beautiful old entrance been demolished? If so, what a shame! Gets the zoo historian's heart beating extra! :)
