I loved these guys, but I do think there were too many for the size of the exhibit. I wondered why the crowned pigeon was in there! And unless I remember wrong the ceiling was quite low when housing something like a giant squirrel (correct me if I'm wrong).

That all sounded quite negative didn't it? Sorry :)

I was there maybe a month ago, and it was the first time I'd seen Sri Lankan mouse deer and Sri Lankan giant squirrels, so this was one of my favourite enclosures despite my criticism.

I have to agree with you on the small size! I've always maintained that Critters Longhouse enclosures are too small :)

But i'm glad to update that on my last visit in Oct 09, only a pair of mousedeer occupied the enclosure. There was a bit of a baby boom at one point (something like 4 born at the same time), so you probably saw more at the enclosure when you visited. Although Singapore Zoo management is probably of the opinion that the enclosure is spacious enough to house 4 individuals.

For the giant squirrels, they have access to the taller enclosure next door (with porcupines and finlayson's squirrels). The photo I took shows the squirrel in the taller cage.

The crowned pigeon is a surplus (the rest of the crowned pigeons in the Zoo are Common, this guy's a Victoria) and i guess the keepers didn't know where else to put it!

I thought the number of mouse deer must be due to births. Any idea where the others went to from the enclosure..off-display I am assuming.
