No wonder that the Singapore Zoo is often hailed as one of the all-time great zoological parks. The dense foliage in the background surely helps, as animal enclosures probably appear much larger than they truly are. There are lots of open-air habitats, and such enclosures are a thousand times better for both animals and humans than keeping primates in metal cages. My wife has been to the Singapore Zoo and I know from her and photos online that just about all of the animal exhibits are open-air, lush, fairly spacious and naturalistic. Of course there are a few aberrations (polar bear for example) but this zoo seems to be superb!
from what i know this exhibit was originally for the gorillas? but its seems that they are not suitable to the soil here and one actually died from infection or something?
hence singapore zoo has never house gorillas then.
@Dennis: You are quite right. The present chimpanzee enclosure and the adjacent mandrill enclosure were originally built for gorillas. All 4 males housed in the enclosure died of a tropical soil disease. A second attempt to house a pair of gorillas in a concrete-floored, semi-indoor enclosure several years later resulted in 1 of the 2 animals dying, also from soil disease. The 2nd animal was quickly returned back to Europe, where all the 5 gorillas originated. It seemed that the European-bred gorillas had lost their immunity to the disease.
