a unicorn, apparently

actually a one-horned eland
September 2009
An old 'unicorn' she is too. Last of her kind at the zoo with the species being phased out.

She was still there December 2011.

Do you know if any species will replace her and join the White Rhino when she dies?

She was still there in July :)

Probably not. The Zoo has been phasing out its large ungulates. The only African antelope that will be left on display at the Zoo will be the Nyala (surplus Nyala males may be put in with the rhinos though).

Interesting and sad, but not really surprising, that they are phasing out such species. Although I think the zoo could sustain two antelope species, especially if they shared species with Night Safari.

The Night Safari, in contrast, has many, many large ungulates, although these are predominantly Asian. Are there plans to phase any of those out?

For Night Safari, the only Asian deer species that may be phased out are the Indian Sambars (a few females left). I'm not sure what's the deal with the bantengs - again a female-only group of 4.

For the African hoofstock, the Kafue lechwe seem to be on the way out too. The herd has been reduced significantly over the past few years. I've heard of plans to bring in new antelope species (gazelles apparently) as part of the African zone expansion. It's likely that the park will have a drive-thru section in the expanded African zone.

That would be really cool, it would be awesome to have a drivethrough that gave great views of the giraffe and zebra, and better views of the hippo and buffalo, looking down on them was not ideal. Will the African drive through be located in the same area as the African species are now? Gazelles would be a good contrast species if kept with other ungulates, but might be a bit lost on their own.

Is the oryx herd looking stable?

A drive-thru for the giraffes was proposed years back but shelved due to other developments. The African section will supposedly be extended all the way to where the tigers are now, so I don't know where exactly they would locate the drive-thru section (if indeed there will be one).

I forgot about the oryxes. The herd is an elderly one and looks to be phasing out too.

Zooish, does the Singapore Zoo belong to a regional organization of other zoos in Asia that would be the equivalent of the AZA or EAZA? Does such an organization exist, and if so does it have collaborative species management plans for various species? I'm curious if there are regional decisions to maintain and phase out certain species as there are in North America and Europe and whether this is what guides some of Singapore's decisions to keep or boot species like elands.
