Because of natural reasons, a lifeage of 86 is impossible for elephants-but of course, it is often used for marketing reasons by some zoos and especially, circusses-and indeed, most circusses have record elephants-the smallest or most ill ones.....

Maybe not a fake, seems to be more a mistake (from my mind: datas of two or more individuals mixed and/or doubts about the birth date as well as the fact, that elephants lost all their chewteeth before 60/65, so they had to die of starvation). There should be more infos when you google it.

I visit the zoo site ,the date I mention was that he came to the zoo .It said Lin Wang been captured from Japanese military in 1943 , and at that time , he is already an adult .(the zoo said 26)
Elephants often changes their identity-especially in the chaos of diffrent wars..."Lin wang" wasn't for sure the same animal, which was kept at the japenses millitary.Fact is-it is biolocial impossible for elephants getting older than a maxium of 65-70 years-like zoomaniac said. Most elephants die between 60ty and 65.

Identity mistakes is possible, but Lin Wang was indeed pretty old even if he didn't reach the age 86.
Lin Wang and General Sun Liren, taken in 1947
General Sun Liren brought Lin Wang to Taiwan in 1947, and then send it to Taipei Zoo in 1951. Is Lin Wang the only one male elephant transferred to Taiwan? If it is, there won't be any doubt.
It's 56 years from 1947 to 2003. Sun Liren was 185cm tall, so judging from this photo, Lin Wang had already been a mature adult. Even we treat it as 20 years old at that time, it was more than 75 years old when it died.
I am also confused, Lin Wang died from cardiorespiratory failure sudden shock, and was not said to lose all his teeth.
I don´t know much about elephants and also that photo with the general doesn´t allow to judge the height correctly because we can´t see their feet.
But from articles and own observation, growth of bull elephants is very individual and depends on nutrition a lot so it is hard to estimate the age only based on a photo. Hard working South Asian camp bull elephants reach 200 cm height on average with 10-11 years. Elephant bulls in European zoos reach 200 cm sometime before 5th birthsday.
(BTW, I´ve just checked the latest measurements of female calf Rashmi in zoo Ostrava, Czech republic, she was 186 cm tall on her 3rd birthsday! I think she will reach 200 cm around her 4th birthsday - and she is just a female calf, young bulls grow faster on average.)
