They are both in the same free flight aviary and I thought they were the same bird but now I notice that their bills are different shapes.

Are these both Von der Deckens Hornbills? They are both in the same free flight aviary and I thought they were the same bird but now I notice that their bills are different shapes. This one has a thick bill which tapers sharply at the end whereas the other one has a slim pointed bill.

So what is the reason for the different shaped bills if both birds are the same species?

About the bills your right develfish, about the species not. The bird on this picture IS a Von der Decken's Hornbill - look at the unspotted black wing-coverts and the yellow-white bill-tip !

Thanks guys. Two species instead of one. :)

I have pics of a Von der Deckens from Chester Zoo which has a black bill indicating that it is female and although the bill looks a bit shorter than the one above it definitely doesn't look more slender.
