Magnificent Red Elephants

I wonder why the male doesn\'t have tusks?

And I wonder why are they so red? Is it because of the soil (most likely), or it's their natural coloration?

I'm sure it's the soil, it's very red there.

Does anyone know if the most recent calf at the Korat zoo is male or female?

The mother's a female, not sure about the calf though.

It's curious that the elephants at Belo Horizonte Zoo - ZooChat also have red coloration, and the male also does not have it's tusks. Does somebody knows the origin of Korat zoo's elephants? If they are from Botswana, from the times some african nations were donating wild elephants to zoos due to the troubles with crops, than there must be something in common between these individuals in Thailand and the ones here in Brazil.
