You say renovated, how bad were they before? I hate to judge from an exterior shot but it looks as though there isn't much room for natural substrate or live planting? The height would be good for a leopard subspecies though, would you agree?
It was my dad who commented they had been done up - he was at the zoo a couple of years ago. I think it was fairly cosmetic (lick of paint etc). The map actually shows leopards in this area, but there were no leopards (or leopard labels) to be seen.
These don't look the nicest of exhibits, were there any redeeming features?
Shame about the leopards, I'm guessing they may even have been Indo-Chinese subspecies.
Almost certainly; there are very few non-native forms in Hanoi Zoo. I did see a leopard at Saigon Zoo; not labelled to subspecies but I'm certain it will be an Indochinese. I have seen the subspecies once before, in Kuala Lumpur in 2000. There is one in Europe, at Hoyerswerda.

Not counting questionable African (zoo mix!) leopards, I've seen Amur, Persian, North China, Indian, Indochinese, Javan and Sri Lankan - all in Europe except the Indochinese (haven't been to Hoyerswerda!) and four out of the seven in the UK.
I've never been to Banham, the exhibit looks nice though from photo's though. I've done Thrigby and Africa Alive(!) on various family holidays but I think I may need to get back to Norfolk soon.
