The elephant house is a historical monument of Buenos aires, but this exhibit is not adequate for it´s 3 elephants ( 2 africans and and 1 asian, all females). They have no pool, no shade and are surrounded by a dangerous moat. Buenos Aires zoo should face reality and like Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City send their elephants to better installations. For example, Temaiken would be much better for them.
Can anyone provide more information regarding the three elephants of the Buenos Aires Zoo, such as their names, ages, history, etc? Thank you very much for any help.
carlos77: You are right. The exhibit is not big enough for three elephants, they have a pool but it's not very useful because sometimes is empty and is not very big. Temaiken has the space and money to take care of them, but Temaiken and Buenso Aires Zoo compete against each other, so unfortunately, Bs As zoo is not going to give away one of its most popular animals.
ShowMeElephants: Buenos Aires Zoo has three female elephants. The oldest, is an Asian Elephant called "Mara". She is was born in 1969. She used to live in a circus, where she was abused. In 1996 the local government decided to give custody of Mara (and other animals) to the zoo. She does not trust in people with the exception of some of her zookeepers. She is the matriarch, but she is having some problems with another elephant for dominance. The other two are african elephants, they are in their twenties. Their names are "Pupi" (or Pupy) and "Cuqui" (or Kuki or Cuki), they came from a reserve in Africa. I don't know the exact date. I hope this helps
Once again, thank you for the help. You mention a location named Temaiken. Do they exhibit elephants as well? And do you know from which circus Mara originated?
Temaiken does not have elephants. Mara used to live in a circus called "Rodas", I think it still exists but Iam pretty sure that it does not have animals any more.
