2013 Zoo de Buenos Aires

White-eared Opossum (Didelphis albiventris)
Nice photo, looks like you were on the night tour of the Buenos Aires zoo. Was this opossum part of the captive collection or was it a free ranging animal ?

Thank you! And it was a free ranging animal. I that went around with the director of the zoo and his girlfriend at night after closing attempting to spot this opossum species. The first half hour we didn't spot any, but then we would spot 5 different opossums!

carlos77 is right, this realy is a nice looking animal !

Not sure about "nice-looking"...there is an account of these animals in "Three Singles to Adventure", which is about one of Gerald Durrell's collecting trips to Guyana - then still a British colony - in 1949.

Basically the beasts ate virtually every disgusting thing Durrell offered to them, including one of their companions. As a potential exotic pet I think they might be attempted by somebody who found Ratels too docile...
