I believe that this is actually a maned wolf, as the caption has the wrong label on it. I like how you uploaded the deer and wolf photos at the same time as the resemblance is startling.:) There are certainly a lot of South American species that rarely ever make it into North American or European zoos, so thanks for the photos!

Nope, this is a deer, unless Maned Wolves in Canadian zoos have antlers...:-)

Lovely species. When I went to West Berlin in 1997 I saw the species label but not the animals. Don't expect they'll be back in Europe any time soon.

I hope that you guys recognize that I was being sarcastic when I commented that the photo caption was labeled incorrectly, as with 180 zoos under my belt I definitely know what a maned wolf looks like.:) It was interesting to see the photos being uploaded yesterday as the maned wolf and marsh deer shots came up at the exact same time and it was startling to see the resemblance between the disparate species.

Joking apart, you're right! I have heard the term "The Maned Wolf of the deer family" used to describe this animal.

UK birders have a term called "jizz". meaning the impression that an unfamiliar animal makes on you. Marsh Deer definitely possess Maned Wolf jizz!
