Zoologico de Cali 2012

mountain tapir or woolly tapir (Tapirus pinchaque)
Realistically, I'll never see Javan Rhino, so this species is top of my list of large ungulates to see before I die. How many animals are in South American zoos?

As far as I'm aware, only three. There may be others in very small/private collections, or as village/farm pets - or some I'm just not aware of. These two in Cali were sent from San Francisco (?), so they share the same limited gene pool as the other North American specimens. The third specimen was rescued as a youngster in 2005 - I've not heard much about it recently. It is kept in Colombia's Huila province, having been rescued from a bathing resort near Pitalito.

In addition to the San Fransisco Zoo they can also be seen at the Los Angeles Zoo, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado, as well as in Canada at the Mountain View Conservation & Breeding Centre in Langley, BC. With those two locations in Columbia I guess that makes 6 places worldwide that have them.

Don't think there are any left in San Francisco now.....

Mountain tapirs are such an amazing creature, I am proud to work at the Los Angeles Zoo were they have them, seeing them every week and twice a week is nothing to take for granted

Gladys Porter Zoo used to have Mountain tapirs, In a book I have called The Endangered Ones by James A. Cox, there is a photo of the Mountain tapirs that were at GPZ

Mountain tapirs are on Potter Park Zoo's master plan, but we all know that's never going to happen...

San Diego Zoo also used to have Mountain tapirs, @Giant Eland, didn't you see San Diego's Mountain tapirs ?

If potter park was to get all the animals on their masterplan, zoo nerds would flock there by the dozens just to see these, vicunas( a US rarity), andes skunk, and more importantly, chinese golden snub nosed monkeys.
