At the time of this picture the pygmy hippopotami lived in the Pachyderm House in Aalborg Zoo along with white rhinos and malayan tapirs. In 2006 and pygmy hippos moved to the new African Village while the rhinos and tapirs left the zoo. The old Pachyderm House exists no more.

Thanks Toddy - I know and I'd love to see it one day. When I was there in 1986 the Pigmy Hippos were actually out on the Savannah, they may even be spotted on the photos from the 80s that I uploaded some months ago.
They rhinos are gone for good but the long-term plans for Aalborg Zoo involves a large tropical house with an Asian theme. This would provide new exhibits for species such as Bornean orang-utans, malayan tapirs and rhinoceros hornbills.

They have little space available if I'm not mistaken; I seem to remember the zoo being surrounded by houses. Or do they? What will be axed to accommodate this?
The zoo is indeed bordered by houses on two sides and a public park and stadium on the other two. Expansion is therefore impossible for Aalborg Zoo. The new tropical house would be (according to the original plan) located where the current tropical house, sea lion/penguin exhibits and children's zoo is now.
