As people like to know animal names, we named this beetle Hildegaard. She turned up on the terrace about every other night we were there. Didn't seem at all bothered by 20 (often slightly inebriated) ecologists.
Dominica!? Ee, in my day we had field trips to the Isle of Man and Lake Bala.
Nice beetle though. Did you put a blob of nail varnish on it to determine if it was the same one, and what the total beetle population on the terrace was?
Well, we only ever saw one female at a time, but I confess we didn't mark it so it could have been a different one every time!
Dominica was fun, but it was at extra cost (meaning only about two-thirds of us went). It was very well run - keeping us working yet also accepting that we were in the Caribbean and would want some R&R time!
Highlights of the two weeks were the wildlife - including endemic lizards, hummingbirds, a Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Magnificent Frigatebirds, Brown Boobies, many, many bats (sadly most of which remained unidentified) and Humpback Whales - and one of the best nights out I ever had, at the Semi-Final of the Dominican Calypso Championship!
Wow that's cool! She maybe Dynastes hercules-hercules which is my favorite spiece of all time!!
I heard there are only a few hercules beetles are left in wildlife eapecially the hercules-hercules. How lucky of you! It's been more than 15years from then... but have you ever revisited to Dominica and seen hercules beetle again?
Can I still meet the wild hercules beetle in Dominica?
