2013 Huachipa

bushy-tailed olingo (Bassaricyon gabbii)
Very nice indeed - but how sure are you it really *is* a Bushy-tailed?

Haha I don't know if you're making a joke about the lack of bushy-tailedness, but you actually have me wondering now if it isn't maybe an Allen's olingo (Bassaricyon alleni) considering that species' prevalence in Peru, whereas Bassaricyon gabbii bearly lives in Peru. The animal was off exhibit so there was no label. In their records, the zoo has it listed as Bassaricyon gabbii. I'm going to check my HMW Carnivore Volume.

Oh, I wasn't making a joke about the bushiness of the tail - just noting that as the olingo split has not been 100% accepted by all quarters, and is relatively new, this collection might not have reflected the split.

Having looked at both HMW and Carnivores of the World (Hunter & Barrett 2011) I think it probably *is* a Bushy-tailed Olingo due to the coloration of the face - but there are so few photos available showing the differences between taxa that this can only be a tentative identification.

At this point I'm quite confident this is Allen's olingo (Bassaricyon alleni). Coloration of face and tail in photos from iNaturalist and googleimages matches and the shape of tail is of course the better match. On top of that, it's also more likely this animal was found near this zoo in Peru, instead of from Central America.

Would really appreciate if a moderator could change the photo caption for me!
