A mother and young western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus melanops) in Aalborg Zoo. The kangaroos arrived here in 1992 and only a handful of zoos in Europe keep these. Unfortunately, these are not part of the future exhibits planned in Aalborg Zoo.

...only a handful of zoos in Europe keep these...

I read this fact and had to do a bit of zootierliste-ing and it turns out that you're right Toddy, only 16 zoos in Europe! Sorry for doubting you Toddy. :D
Interestingly enough, in the UK the same amount of collections hold red kangaroo (7 or 8 if you're counting Belfast for reds) so they're just as common on our little island. Mainland Europe shows a definite preference for red kangaroos but wallabies (parma and Bennetts) seem to be everywhere, both in the UK and on the mainland.

In summary, I didn't realise greys were such a rarity! :D

It is quite interesting how so few zoos keep this species. That is also why it is such a shame that Aalborg Zoo will phase out this species eventually.
