Aalborg Zoo - Western grey kangaroos

A mother and young western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus melanops) in Aalborg Zoo. The kangaroos arrived here in 1992 and only a handful of zoos in Europe keep these. Unfortunately, these are not part of the future exhibits planned in Aalborg Zoo.

I read this fact and had to do a bit of zootierliste-ing and it turns out that you're right Toddy, only 16 zoos in Europe! Sorry for doubting you Toddy.
Interestingly enough, in the UK the same amount of collections hold red kangaroo (7 or 8 if you're counting Belfast for reds) so they're just as common on our little island. Mainland Europe shows a definite preference for red kangaroos but wallabies (parma and Bennetts) seem to be everywhere, both in the UK and on the mainland.

In summary, I didn't realise greys were such a rarity!

It is quite interesting how so few zoos keep this species. That is also why it is such a shame that Aalborg Zoo will phase out this species eventually.
