Strelitzia Flower at Jungle Park (Las Aguilas), 13/11/10

Strelitzia sp. (reginae?)

Widely-grown to the point of ubiquity in Tenerife.

I've been learning about these. The blue part contains the petals and sexual parts of the flower; the orange bits are sepals. The base part that petals and sepals emerge from is the spathe and is extra tough to provide a perch for the sunbirds that are the natural pollinators.
