The finale was this swarm of ibis, spoonbills and storks.

The bird show lasted around 40-45min and basically consisted a just bringing out bird after bird and getting them flying around for 5min, often overlapping birds.

The species used at the show I saw were:

Southern Ground Hornbill
American Bald Eagle
European Griffon Vulture
Hooded Vulture
Chimango Caracara
Eastern Grey Crowned Crane
King Vulture
White-headed Vulture
Rueppell's Griffon Vulture
Marabou
Harris Hawk
Abdim's Stork
Red-tailed hawk
Black Kite
European White Stork
Sacred Ibis
Straw-necked Ibis
African Spoonbill

I really enjoy it when parks use birds other than the standard birds of prey and parrots in their shows. It really showcases them to the public, when they may otherwise just pass them over. In addition there are so many birds with interesting behaviour, most of which can be trained quite simply.

Absolutely. There was a second bird show that I believe was predomintely parrots - unfortunately I didn't have to time to watch that one (had to be at the airport!). Didn't want to miss this one though, as I'd heard good things (rightly).

Do you know of any other zoos or parks that do this? I can only remember Jurong with flamingos and hornbills and Australia zoo with black-necked storks and a cormorant of some type.

I've seen kookaburras used before (I think at London?) and crowned cranes and ground hornbills at SeaWorld (California). Parrots quite a bit of course. I think storks, ibis and spoonbills were a first for me.

Besides some raptors we also use seriemas, crowned cranes, trumpeter hornbills, sacred ibises, marabous and a pied crow (and hopefully Great White Pelicans next year) at Zoomarine - Portugal. All showing natural and interesting natural behaviors.

For the audience this provides a much better "entertaining" moment, giving us the chance to educate people not only about the birds themselves, but also their threats and what can be done to help them.

I like the idea of pelicans!

I have been to Zoomarine, back in 2002. Remember getting the surprise of my life at finding my first ever Harp Seal there! Was a good day.

I agree in every way, and there cannot be a better way to present such intelligent birds like Pied Crows, and a wonderful way to show such an interesting and little know bird like a seriema. I hope that some canadian zoos start this and also that my home zoo calgary expands their bird collection, thus allowing us to expand our group of animal ambassadors.
