Is this the huge acrylic tube display in the penguin house? I think these are sardines. An unusual but very effective exhibit, especially at feeding time.
Yup - the very tank. I have to say I was being deliberately cagey as regards the ID as they're not labelled and once we're talking mid-sized silvery fishes I start to lose confidence.
I can't say I know much about Atlantic marine fish, but these aren't sardines (depending on what genus one is calling sardines of course); the dorsal fin is in the wrong place, being too close to the caudal peduncle (can't quite make out in the confusion -- do these fish have two dorsals, or just the one set near the rear of the body?)
I'm definitely no fish expert. They were labelled sardines when I visited but that was several years ago and it is quite possible the display has changed in the meantime. Otherwise my experience of sardines is limited to those that come out of a tin.
