The only specimens to be seen in any zoo around the world.

Loro Parque houses the only specimens to be seen in any zoo around the world.

The Maroon-fronted Parrots now housed at Loro Parquo came from a Mexican Zoo ( if I'm
right Zoofari ) and this zoo has a breeding-progamm for them. I don't know however if they are housed in an off-public breeding-area or if some ( all ? ) are on public view.

Thanks Maguari. With Loro Parque's collection, I found photography is quite reliant on your luck. I kept coming back to these lovely birds though and couldn't find the photo I was looking for when I was uploading yesterday.

I was previously under the impression that they were on display in Mexico, but there's a sign on the enclosure at Loro Parque stating that they're the only zoo with them on exhibit.

OK but of course there are more zoos who are telling us that they are the only holders, first breeders, have the largest enclosure, the largest group of a surtain species etc.....but is this always true ???

Of course it's not always true, but Loro Parque genuinely is a first/only/best holder for a large number of birds on display - but this is the only sign mentioning a unique holding which I remember seeing on my visit. Even the large signs for Lear's macaws didn't mention being the only public exhibitor in Europe (or even outside Brazil); so I felt the 'unique' sign for maroon-fronted parrots deserved some credibility. Nonetheless, it was still a little bit of a surprise that these aren't slightly more widespread in captivity.

A search on the CONABIO site has given the information that the only breeding group of maroon fronted parrots in a zoo in Mexico are at Africam Safari Park ( an AZA accredited zoo, of course). At Africam, all the breeding area for birds is off exhibit. The birds at Loro Parque most likely came from Africam Safari Park. Since they are not exhibited at africam the loro parque birds are then the only ones on exhibit in the world.

As far as I'm aware, Loro Parque's birds did come from Africam. One pair is on display and I believe another pair is kept off-show.

Does anybody know if the Living Desert in California used to have a pair of maroon-fronted parrots? They had a pair of desert parrots in their Eagle Canyon area and they weren't thick-billed parrots.
