As I have commented earlier, I think that this particular cage must one of the worst atrocities in this animal-tormention-centre in Egypt a.k.a. a "zoo".

Very thankful to forumster nayer, though, for documenting the horrible conditions under which the animals have to suffer.

Zoos in developing nations?

Dan,

1st, on animal welfare grounds there is much room for improvement. Similarly to EAZA with E.European zoo support network, I feel "modern" zoos must adopt each a "developing" zoo in the developing world. Often, with very little effort and money we can improve much.

2nd, I do not agree with the notion that these zoos should be shut down. How can city folks in the developing world relate to wildlife, habitats et al?

3rd, I admit there is a need for re-focus on animal conservation in P.Z. Alexandria - and that can well be said for a lot of "developed" zoos too!

That 2011 picture is unbelievable...

Ugh. Nasty. How anyone thinks that cage is a good place to keep this animal escapes me.

I had thought it was a temporary holding space, especially as their old home just a few metres away is empty:

Still a concrete-floored cage, but at least it's bigger and they used to behave more naturally there.

Either way, I'm sorry to say that I'd be surprised to see this animal around next year.
