Aalborg Zoo - Lion exhibit

  • Media owner Toddy
  • Date added
The outdoor exhibit for Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) outside the Carnivore House in Aalborg Zoo. The outdoor exhibit is furnished with grass, trees, logs and rocks and a nice addition to the zoo.

The new Carnivore Exhibits opened in 2012, twice doubling the space the big cats have outside. The old house was maintained, expanding the visitor facilities and giving it an Asian theme. The old big cat indoor exhibits remained unchanged except for the old leopard indoor exhibit that was rebuilt to also house tigers.

Is that cave-like structure in the front an entrance to some sort of viewing tunnel/pop up bubble?

I don't think I've thanked you for this latest set of photos yet. This tour of a little known Danish zoo is awesome. :)

It is indeed a viewing tunnel where people can get ground-level view of the lions. One of the main philosophies with these new exhibits was to give visitors a lot of different perspectives, both from above, ground level, from underneath and under water.

Thank you PAT, my pleasure :)

What happened to the old lion pride?

I know that 0.3 young ones went to Odense ZOO to form the new breeding group but as for the rest I cannot tell. My best guess would be that the old ones were simply put down.

The breeding adults (1.2) were sent to Ree Park on a temporary basis. Afaik they are still there... the 4th cub went to somewhere in Italy
