AQUA - Mink exhibit

An overview of the exhibit for minks in the Aquapark of the AQUA Freshwater Aquarium in Silkeborg, Denmark. This is a faboulous exhibit which is spacious and lush allowing the minks to climb, dig, seek shade and have some privacy as well as take a swim. As you can see the exhibit even has underwater viewing.

The mink is not a native species but AQUA also has a major theme about invasive species and their impact on the enrivonment.

A fantastic looking exhibit for a small mammal species such as a mink. I'm not sure if I've ever even seen a mink in a zoo, as they are commercially farmed here in Canada and are regularly killed for their skins.

Minks are commercialy farmed here in Denmark as well where they have become a real pest! The mink in Denmark is an example of the damage done by invasive species. We have several mink farms in Denmark and I do not agree with this method of keeping minks but the animal activists here, as well as in a lot of other countries, makes the grave mistake of releasing them into "freedom", that is to say the Danish nature. The wildlife in Denmark has no escape from the mink which is now the only predator we have that hunts on land, in the trees and in the water. It is a serious competitor for other predators (such as the European otter) and kills loads of wildlife. It is estimated that 80.000 minks live in the Danish wilderness killing of about 40 tons of Danish fauna EVERY DAY.
