According to The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals Second Edition, Procavia capensis is five separate species. These are Southern Rock Hyrax P. capensis (S and SW Africa), Ethiopian Rock Hyrax P. habessinica (NE Africa and Arabia), Black-necked Rock Hyrax P. johnstoni (central and E Africa), Kaokoveld Rock Hyrax P. welwitchii (Kaokoveld), and Red-headed Rock Hyrax P. ruficeps (S Sahara).

The book also notes that these five species may be subdivided into subspecies.
