Best zoo toilets:
1. Edinburgh, at the entrance to the zoo. Very nicely done 'family' loo, with space to take in your buggy and nice theming of a sea theme.
I'm a bit surprised by that too! When I first saw all the attention it was getting I thought that maybe people found it inappropriate for ZooChat and were complaining!
people are always fascinated by the mundane-made-extraordinary. Its one of the joys of travelling to discover that what you thought was standard can actually be strikingly different in another culture.
Not so sure about no toilet paper at all - I would at least like something to dry myself with after squirting with the hose ... although I guess in Kuwait, you can just wait a minute or so and the dry air would do the trick for you!
That's not a mop in the picture! That's actually a pipe going down the wall, and then it connects to the porcelain under the floor. Theres some concrete over the top of it and it hasn't been tiled. On top of the pipe is a button that you push and a little water washes the porcelain.
And as for having a wet bum, yes, the hot dry air will help to dry it, but remember the traditional garments are long robes, not pants. I imagine that a wet bum in a long robe would not be so bad.
Female friends have told me, however, that using one of these 'squats' when wearing trousers is a very, very tricky exercise (because the floor is often wet)!
I know this is an old thread, but while finding another photo from my collection I came across one of a squat toilet on an overnight ferry in Indonesia (I think between Flores and West Timor), which I thought Hix might appreciate me adding here...
EDIT: and it uploads sideways, despite being saved in the vertical. Just tilt your head to the right.

There was another I saw, in Uganda, which was little more than a hole in the concrete floor of a broom cupboard, round the back of a petrol station. I knew I should have taken a photo of it, but my camera was in the car. I suspect Orangeperson might remember it.
